Painted Hills Colors

One of the first sights on entering the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, northwest of Mitchell. The colorful layers of its hills correspond to various geological eras, formed when the area was an ancient river floodplain. The black soil is lignite formed from vegetative matter The grey coloring is mudstone, siltstone, and shale. The red coloring is laterite formed by floodplain deposits when the area was warm and humid.
