Carved Newel Post on Staircase

One of 19 carved animal newel posts on the staircases of Timberline Lodge which was built at elevation of 5,960 feet on the south slope of Mt. Hood and dedicated Sept 28,1937 by Franklin D. Roosevelt. The 55,000 square foot structure was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977. It was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood. Much of the work was done by workers under the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
